Where did the summer go? For that matter, where did autumn go? As I write this, the temperature is in the mid 30’s, skies are overcast, and we’ve had a few skiffs of snow. As wintery as it is, I’m sure it won’t be long before we’ll be looking back wistfully on days like this as we scrape our windshields and practice our snow-shoveling techniques.
But there are plenty of things to do in Custer Country to get out of the cold. Enjoy a high school or college basketball or volleyball game, or visit one of the many art museums and galleries in our region.
For the hardier among us, there’s always football action. From 6-man to Class AA, there’s plenty of action to enjoy. The cracking of the helmets, the crashing of pads and the collisions between offense and defense will help keep the chill off if you remember to cheer on your favorite team and show your vocal appreciation of the efforts of every player.
Another activity to enjoy is “Boo at the Zoo” at ZooMontana on October 31. Halloween will provide lots of spooky experiences at Montana’s only real zoo.
Whatever you find to do in Custer Country, enjoy yourself and be safe. And stay
warm, too. |

The crisp fall mornings in Montana’s Custer Country are ideal for hunters aiming to bag antelope, white tails, mulies, elk or upland birds. It’s a tradition passed down from father to son as it has been for centuries.
The wide open prairies of Custer Country offer endless possibilities whether you’re searching for a trophy bull or just looking to fill your freezer with your favorite wild game.
Once you’ve gotten your prize, there are plenty of places in Custer Country to have your animal processed or to have an impressive mount prepared for hanging in your den.
Always be aware of gun-handling safety and be sure you get permission to hunt; and, always know whose land you’re on. There’s no reason to ruin a great experience by crossing the wrong fence and having to go home empty-handed.
Help keep Custer Country beautiful. Pack out what you pack in. If you see someone else has left trash, be a good steward of the land and pick it up. The landowner will appreciate it and he’ll welcome you back.
Happy hunting! |

Want to see some really big art? Drive to Forsyth to see the murals that have been painted on various buildings around town by Forsyth artist Bob Watts. Nationally famous for his “crow bar” paintings which he actually paints with the ubiquitous demolition tool, he has also done three huge murals in Forsyth that are worth making the trip to see. His most recent is the mural on the Independent Press building on Cedar Street and 9th Ave. His first Forsyth mural is a giant steam locomotive on a building on 9th Ave.
His mural on the Yellowstone Pharmacy building on Main Street, however, is what many will consider his masterpiece. At 34 feet high and 110 feet long, the painting itself isn’t the only story. The real challenge was creating the artwork without ever setting foot on the adjacent property. Due to a dispute with the neighboring property owner, Bob had to design, engineer and build a scaffold system that was attached to the wall of the pharmacy. It took two summers to complete, but it’s an amazing testament to his ingenuity, artistry and perseverance.
Of course, while you’re in Forsyth, you can enjoy a movie, a great meal and a leisurely stroll. See you in Forsyth.

For a great diversion, why not take a stroll down Montana Avenue in Billings to visit some of the many art galleries that have opened up shop over the last several years. No matter what media you have an interest in, you’ll find it on Montana Avenue. And you’ll also be pleased to find that there is something to fit even the smallest budget. Original pieces of art don’t have to cost thousands or even hundreds of dollars.
Of course, when it comes to art, Billings isn’t the only place in Custer Country to find it. Cities like Miles City and Glendive
also boast some fine galleries and art centers.
Art is the universal language. Winter is a great time to polish up your accent.
