One of the biggest and most colorful events coming up in Custer Country in August is Crow Fair. This event, which runs from August 14 -17 this year, features Native American hand games and parades featuring some of the most beautiful and intricate Native American regalia you’ll ever see. Many participants not only wear their original beaded clothing and impressive head-dresses, but also festoon their horses with elaborate saddles, blankets
and bridles. There’s a parade each day of the Fair at
10:00 a.m. In addition, Crow Fair becomes the “tepee capitol of the world” for these four days.

Laurel’s Centennial Days are August 8-9. Laurel was established by the Yellowstone County Board of
commissioners on
08-08-08, Aug. 8, 1908.
On Friday,
Aug. 8, you’ll want to get a special hand-stamped commemorative postal cancellation at the U.S. Post Office located on First Avenue of the specially designed Laurel Centennial Post Card. Gay Easton’s book containing photographs of historic Laurel Buildings is now available
at Jan’s IGA, Price Pharmacy, City Hall and the Laurel Chamber of Commerce. Because of interest in the book, Centennial Committee member Jean Carroll Thompson, worked with both tour companies and Montana Rail Link
to establish
a tour, based on locations from The Centennial. >>Click for more details

Custer Country participated in a first on July 19. We were asked to put together a float for the Rosebud/Treasure County Fair’s 100th Anniversary parade in Forsyth, Custer Country’s headquarters city. We didn’t have much time to plan it, but thanks to Luchelle’s (my office assistant and the artistic member of our two-person staff) creativity, we were able to come up with a pickup and flat-bed trailer from a local used car dealership, a theme and even some costumes to use. Luchelle’s family helped paint the signs. We all decorated the trailer, and Luchelle’s fiancé, Rick Feller and her daughter, Amanda, manned the truck and threw candy to the hundreds of folks who turned out to watch the parade.

If you’re looking for something unique in Custer Country, you don’t have to look very far. But one of my favorite places in our region is the Historic St. Labre Indian Mission and School in Ashland, MT. It’s just a couple hours out of Billings on Highway 212. The mission was established in 1884 and now features a school, a museum and a beautiful church. The Cheyenne Indian Museum has artifacts from the history of the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and other tribes. It’s a beautiful drive and educational, too. Check it out at www.StLabre.org

Looking for something to do that's close to home, educational and fun, too? Why not jump in your car or hop on your motorcycle and travel the Pompeys Pillar loop, one of Custer Country's getaway trips? In less than a day, you can see the only evidence visible by Captain William Clark and mentioned in the Lewis and Clark Journals that is still left along the trail of the Voyage of Discovery, and then visit two Indian Reservations, several sites important to the history of the Battle of the Little Big Horn and enjoy some great scenery. There's always something great to do in Custer Country!
