It's Bucking Horse Sale Time!
Miles City is the place to be on May 15 –18 for one of Custer Country’s most exciting annual events. The 2008 installment of this unforgettable event will have all the thrills, excitement and fun of the 57 past versions, with some new twists thrown in. Concerts, art auctions, great food, a parade and lots of action have been the hallmarks of this one-of-a-kind event since 1950.
The world’s rankest strings of bucking broncs test the best of the west’s tough young cowboys to provide heart-stopping entertainment for the 1000s who attend. Imagine being on the back of a 1000-pound mass of muscle and menacing temper, tensing with every fiber of its being as it waits to make its escape from the bucking chute. Then, imagine that you’re determined to stay on him for an 8-second eternity, using only one hand. If you can do that, you might begin to get an inkling of what these cowboys go through for a little prize money and lots of glory.
If 1000-pound animals don’t make you tremble, how about upping the ante to a 2000-pound bull. Now you’re talking dangerous. With nothing but a leather glove on a leather grip and a rodeo clown to distract the snorting, malevolent beast under you, that 8 seconds might seem like two eternities. Hitting the ground in one piece is no guarantee of safety, since the bull takes your presence as an invasion of his turf. Watch the agile moves of the rodeo clown as he maneuvers himself between the 1-ton juggernaut and the cowboy who’s headin’ for the hills. Now, that’s entertainment!
And if parades, bull and bronc rides, shopping and hootin’ and hollerin’ aren’t enough for you, there’s the street dance and saloon-hopping at night. Pull a stool up to one of the 100+ year-old bars like the “Montana” and toss back a couple of cold beers while you swap stories with the locals. After all, the people in Miles City are what help preserve the feel of the Old West in the “Cow Capitol of Montana.” You’ll go home tired, but you’ll vow to come back again and again.
